Beauty tips for busy mums

You want to leave the house looking good but instead of make-up, all you have on is the residue from sticky fingers. Sound familiar? Having any sort of beauty routine is a struggle when you’re a mum. But don’t give up; it’s important to feel good about how you look.

Below are a few beauty tips for mums that are quick and easy to fit around your busy life:

Health & fitness

Beauty starts on the inside. We all know that, right?
Eating healthy food and doing consistent exercise is important – I absolutely agree – but if you’re like me, it’s hard to find time to invest in your health.

I constantly remind myself of these basic rules for good health:

  • Drink a lot of water
  • Exercise
  • Eat a balanced diet

It’s a good idea to incorporate health into your daily routine. Here are some ideas:

  • Carry a water bottle with you everywhere.
  • If you can find time for block exercise, that’s great. However, if you’re like me and that time eludes you, think of doing exercise in 10 minute blocks. I walk my children to school each morning and afternoon. That’s a 15 minute walk, twice a day. It’s certainly not a celebrity workout but it gets my body moving and clears my head.
  • If you need a little energy boost, eat a super-food snack. This might be a banana, some nuts or my favourite: frozen berries mixed with yoghurt.
  • For more ideas, read Lucy’s Get More Energy post.

Beauty items for your handbag

I keep certain beauty items in my handbag so they’re handy when I’m out. Before I get out of the car, I take a minute to glide on a little lip gloss. A bit of lip gloss does wonders, girls… wonders. Here’s my handbag beauty list:

  • Lip gloss. Reapply often and this will keep the lips moisturised too. I use a little lip gloss on my cheeks as well.
  • A zip lock bag with a brush, hair band and a few bobby pins.
  • Tinted sunscreen to protect your skin against the aging effects of the sun’s rays.
  • Cream blush on the cheeks is wonderful when you need to add a little colour to your face.
  • Small scissors and nail file to trim and shape nails.

Skin-care beauty tips

  • Look for a moisturiser that contains sunscreen.
  • Keep a small spray bottle of water in the fridge. If you feel hot and sticky, spray the mist over your face and neck. Perfect for the summer months!
  • If your skin needs a quick freshen up, or to remove make up, apply cold cream over your face and carefully wipe it off with Kleenex tissues. This will leave your skin clean and soft.

Make-up

Wearing even the simplest make-up can make you feel special. Brush on loose foundation powder, add some blush and lip gloss and you’re good to go!

If you are going somewhere special, add mascara and eyeliner for a more defined look.

Beauty tips for tired eyes

When my eyes have that “I’m tired” look, I use cosmetics to brighten them. It only takes a few minutes to apply, just follow these five steps:

  1. Apply concealer under the eye.
  2. Apply nude/campaign colour eye shadow on the entire eye lid, right up to the eyebrow line.
  3. Apply skin coloured (nude) eyeliner to the bottom of the eye.
  4. Press in a little silver eye shadow into the inner corner of the eye.
  5. Apply one coat of mascara.

Hair care

  • If you don’t have time to wash your hair and it feels greasy, brush a small amount of baby powder through the roots. Dry shampoo works well too.
  • A glittery hair accessory can make a simple hair-style look gorgeous.
  • If you hair is getting long and you don’t have time to visit the hairdresser, wear your hair in a sleek hairstyle like a bun or a French twist.
  • When you have a haircut, ask the hairdresser for their professional advice on haircuts that are easy to take care of and style.

When you’re a Mum it’s hard to find time for even a cup of tea let alone a beauty routine. It can feel like a challange staying sane as a stay at home mum. Between finding missing shoes, ferrying children around and wiping jam off chairs, there seems to be no time left for mascara. However, when you do take a few moments out of your day to be a little girly, you’ll feel so much better for it! Go on – put on that pretty brooch or wear your favourite pair of earrings. Take a moment to add a rosy glow to your cheeks and a sparkly clip in your hair. Keep lip-gloss everywhere: in the car, handbag, nappy bag and at home. Find a little beauty time in your life and don’t forget to smile.

Thanks for the tips. I badly need this! Due to my busy schedule sometimes I forgot to take care of my skin. My eyes look dull and tired. With your tips I am sure that dark circles on my eyes will be gone in no time. Thanks!

I'm not a mum, but I find it hard too! I park the car a little further from work and have swapped ALL elevators for stairs and it feels much better - don't know if I'm losing weight though!

Yes, it's very true: Mums need a little time to feel good about how the look...it's less about how we look and more about how we feel I believe. Thanks for your comment!

I use Thin Lizzy. I like it. Gives me great cover and it doesn't take me as long to do my makeup in the mornings now.

I haven't used Thin Lizzy before. Have you? It's a mineral based make up so it would be easy to apply and quick to use.

I love these ideas, so simple and fast. I find when I remember to just brush on loose foundation, mascara and gloss, it makes all the difference. The powder I use is also a concealor, so it saves time.
